EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW! EXPEDITIONS IN AESTHETICS AND SUSTAINABILITY opens at the Uferhallen in Berlin-Wedding on 2 September 2010. The exhibition is curated by Adrienne Goehler and coordinated by Jaana Prüss. Organizing body: Stiftung Forum der Kulturen zu Fragen der Zeit. Patron: Jochen Flasbarth, Umweltbundesamt Dessau.

EXPEDITIONS IN AESTHETICS AND SUSTAINABILITY presents artistic practices that contribute to the preservation of the planet and aim to influence conscious consumer behavior. Sustainability requires a broadening of perception in the collaborating of the arts and sciences. Boundaries between artistic and technical creativity, between feasibility and idea are abolished.

“We don’t need morality and abstinence, but passion and desire,” states Adrienne Goehler, the exhibition’s curator. In a first exhibition that attempts to bring aesthetics and sustainability into focus using the instruments of contemporary art, forty artists and artists’ groups have taken up this challenge. The stripped down space of the Uferhallen in Berlin-Wedding provides the setting for a range of sculptures, video works, photographs, performances and installations dealing with the cultural dimension of sustainability.

The exhibition has been three years in preparation due to the time needed to convince potential sponsors of the urgent link between aesthetics and sustainability. Indeed so far, questions of eco-aesthetics, as Rasheed Araeen calls it, could only be seen in smaller monothematic exhibitions in Kunstvereinen or in an architectural context.

Even before thinking about the exhibition, Adrienne Goehler was well aware of the need to create a Fund for Aesthetics and Sustainability (Fonds für Ästhetik und Nachhaltigkeit, FÄN) to reunite things that had been arbitrarily separated. An instrument should be found that would collect and tie together different perspectives and activities.

Accompanied by an extensive program of events with artists’ talks, panel discussions and a film program (in the exhibition and in the Arsenal cinema), EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW! is linked to exhibitions in the United States, England and Scandinavia that present and discuss sustainability without uncoupling it from questions of aesthetics.
No commissioned works were made for the exhibition in Berlin. The force of their messages is a result of the presentation and the juxtaposition of the artistic statement with a nature that in the summer of 2010 is clearly increasingly out of joint.

The exhibition is accompanied by workshops with children and young people, discussion forums with representatives from art, science, economics, NGOs and foundations as well as by a diverse film program and the collaboration with the design shop Lilli Green.

Accompanying the exhibition is a publication consisting of a catalogue, storybook, children’s coloring book, construction manual and thoughts concerning a Fund for Aesthetics and Sustainability. To accompany the exhibition, a catalogue will be published by Hatje Cantz Verlag, www.hatjecantz.de ISBN 978-3-7757-2772-3. There will be two collectors’ editions. Adrienne Goehler, curator of the exhibition and editor of the publication lives and works as a publicist and curator in Berlin. 1989-2001 President of the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, 2001-2002 Senator for Science, Research and Culture of the State of Berlin, 2002-2006 Curator of Capital Cultural Fund, Berlin. Following Verflüssigungen from 2006, €1000 für jeden: Freiheit. Gleichheit. Grundeinkommen (Götz Werner & Adrienne Goehler, Econ Verlag) will appear at the end of August 2010.

Jaana Prüss, Project Director, works as art mediator, project manager and freelance curator in Berlin. After setting up a gallery (Prüss & Ochs Galerie) she founded the project space L.O.F.T in 2005 and Morgengrün Kommunikation in 2005.

THE artists and their works

The exhibition examines an artistic practice that begins with Gordon Matta-Clark, Joseph Beuys and Robert Smithson.

Following in that tradition Richard Box makes electric smog glow, Michael Saup makes visible CO2 emissions caused by excessive Internet use, while the word artist Adib Fricke deals with the theme of sustainability in a word installation.

Galerie für Landschaftskunst (Till Krause, Klara Hobza among others) works in an interdisciplinary way on ideas of nature, landscape and the city, Clement Price-Thomas changes the perception of natural phenomena and Néle Azevedo, with her installations of melting ice sculptures uses poetic means to provide an immediate expression of climate change.

The market, including the art market is undermined by Christin Lahr, who in her work Macht Geschenke transfers one cent each day into to the Bundesbank as a gift.
Hermann Josef Hack brings the effects of ignoring climate change to the places of those responsible, in front of parliamentary buildings and in the pedestrian precincts of the capitals of consumption. Gustavo Romano sells something priceless: time. Time to live, to love, to secure something, or to simply do nothing.

In Under Discussion Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla refer to the apparent idyll on the Caribbean island of Vieques, a place that, over a period of sixty years, was fired at by the US Marines for test purposes. Actions by The Yes Men, who have repeatedly infiltrated congresses and conferences, show once more that satire is not in a position to catch up with reality.

While Christoph Keller, with his patented Helioflex reflection system brings light into inner courtyards, Susanne Lorenz, Jakub Szczesny and Zwischenbericht react to the rapidly growing water problem, Jae Rhim Lee carries out research into mushroom spores that compost the dead human body more quickly, Otmar Sattel creates sounds from hay. Marlen Liebau | Marc Lingk and Miguel Rothschild look back to the distant past and recall Francis of Assisi or the disappearance of Atlantis. The work of the group Superflex should be understood globally: they flooded a branch of McDonald’s.

The space between art and science is occupied in the exhibition by Cornelia Hesse-Honegger’s investigations into bugs near to nuclear power plants, Ursula Schulz-Dornburg’s homage to the Russian botanist Nikolai Vavilov and Antal Lakner’s model of a symbiosis between man and plants in periods of a drastic reduction of living space. Henrik Håkansson also occupies this interstitial space in his extensive observations of swarms.

By imitating bees, the “honeycomb builder” Gerd Niemöller has developed extremely light and stable structures from old paper and synthetic resin that could also be employed in disaster areas.

Lukas Feireiss, Luis Berríos-Negrón and Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today examine architectures of change and new ecological intelligence, while Dionisio González’s photographs present architectural solutions to increasing gentrification.

Reflection about the state of the world also implies a reflection about the extinction of species, about BP, as in the work of Tue Greenfort, incomprehensible amounts of waste production, as in the work of Xing Danwen and Till Leeser, re/upcycling, as in the work of Nana Petzet, Dodi Reifenberg, Folke Köbberling | Martin Kaltwasser and the inventor Christian Kuhtz with his practical philosophy of “Einfälle statt Abfälle” (“ideas instead of waste”).

Dina Shenhav is interested in political demonstrations of power in relation to cultivated nature. Suffering and hunger as an instrument of power is the subject of the work of Dan Peterman. Biopiracy as a contemporary form of colonialism is dealt with by Ines Doujak.

Illka Halso, on the other hand, wraps up nature to protect it from the grasp of humans and Gudrun F. Widlok put Europeans without family in Ghana up for adoption.
